Vascular surgery treats diseases of the arteries and veins throughout the body, apart from the heart itself and the vessels inside the skull. It covers ballooning of the main artery (aortic aneurysm), narrowing of the neck arteries that can cause stroke, blocked leg arteries that cause pain on walking or wounds that will not heal, varicose veins, access surgery for dialysis and the circulation problems of the diabetic foot. Vascular surgeons perform both open operations and minimally invasive endovascular procedures carried out from inside the blood vessels, and they choose between them case by case. International patients travel for it to reach teams experienced in complex aortic and limb-saving work, to obtain a second opinion before a major operation, or to have varicose veins treated within a short stay.
