Neonatology is the specialty that cares for newborn babies, especially those born early, born small or born unwell. Neonatologists lead neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), where babies receive breathing support, feeding through a tube or a vein, treatment for infection and jaundice, and close monitoring of the brain, heart and growth. They also coordinate care with surgeons and other specialists when a baby is born with a condition that needs an operation. For international families, neonatology matters in two main situations: a planned birth abroad when a pregnancy scan or a high-risk pregnancy suggests the baby may need intensive care, and an expert second opinion on a newborn's diagnosis or treatment plan. A critically ill newborn is cared for where they are, and emergency transfer is not a reason to travel.
