Anaesthesiology and pain medicine has two closely linked roles. Anaesthesiologists keep you safe and comfortable during operations and procedures: they assess your health beforehand, choose general, regional or local anaesthesia or sedation, monitor you throughout and control pain afterwards, so every international patient who has surgery meets this team. Pain medicine applies the same skills to long-lasting pain, using image-guided injections, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation and spinal cord stimulation for back and neck pain, sciatica, nerve pain and pain that continues after surgery. Patients travel for this care to reach experienced interventional pain teams with image guidance on site, to fit diagnostic blocks and treatment into one planned stay, or to be assessed for spinal cord stimulation when other treatments have not helped enough.
