High Risk Pregnancy Care

High risk pregnancy care is the specialised follow-up of a pregnancy in which the mother, the baby or both face an increased chance of complications, provided by perinatologists, the maternal-fetal medicine specialists within obstetrics. It brings closer monitoring, advanced ultrasound and genetic testing, and treatment for conditions such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, growth restriction or a twin pregnancy, so that problems are found early and managed before they harm mother or child. Care is planned individually and often involves several specialties working together. Expectant mothers travel abroad for this care to reach experienced perinatology teams, detailed fetal imaging and, where needed, treatment of the baby before birth, with the pregnancy and the delivery planned around their journey.
